How To Make Copycat Cracker Barrel Chicken And DumPlings
Start by putting chicken, celery ribs, onion, and broth in a stock pot or Dutch oven. Let that simmer for a while, and you’ll be surprised at how much flavor comes from so few ingredients.
Make the dumplings while that is cooking. Now, don’t be scared of the dumplings. They’re easy to make (my kids even help me!). You just mix up some soft dough, roll it out really thin, and cut it into strips or squares.
But if you really don’t want to make your own dumplings, check out my recipe for Instant Pot chicken and frozen dumplings, which uses dumplings from the freezer section of the grocery store.
Ingredients – Chicken and Dumplings
- 6 cup chicken stock
- 2 broken pieces of celery ribs
- 1/2 medium onion (keep it in big pieces)
- 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in half for each breast
- 3 cups flour for everything
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- 1 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp milk
- To taste, salt and pepper
Instructions –Chicken and Dumplings
- Add water, celery, onion, and chicken breasts to a stockpot or Dutch oven.
- Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer, partly covered, for about 15 minutes, or until the chicken breast is cooked through. Make the dumplings while the chicken is cooking.
- Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl. Add the milk and stir just until it comes together into a lumpy dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
- Cut the dough into strips or squares about 1 to 2 inches wide using a pizza cutter.
- When the chicken is done, take it out of the pan and put it on a cutting board. Take out the pieces of onion and celery and throw them away.
- Add the dough strips to the simmering broth and cook for about 20 to 30 minutes, stirring
- every now and then. This will cook the dumplings and make the stock thick like gravy.
- While the dumplings cook, cut or chop the chicken and put it back in the pot.
- Taste and add salt and pepper, then serve warm.

Cracker Barrel Chicken And Dumplings Review
Tips for the Best Dish
- Do not mix the dough too much, or the dumplings will be too hard and chewy.
- Let dumplings sit out on the counter for 30 minutes before cooking them to make them extra soft and fluffy.
- Use buttermilk instead of milk to make dumplings more fluffy. Because buttermilk is more acidic than milk, it reacts better with baking soda.
- Don’t cook the dumplings for too long or they will fall apart in the soup. Also, don’t stir them. Let them cook in peace with the lid on!
- You also don’t want to undercook them, or they’ll taste like raw flour. They’re not done just because they’re floating.
- The toothpick method is the best way to check. Put a toothpick through the middle of a dumpling. If the toothpick is clean, the dumplings are ready.
- You can keep chicken and dumplings in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days. Keep it in a container that doesn’t let air in so it doesn’t pick up the smells and tastes of other things in your fridge.
- Keep in mind that the dumplings are more likely to fall apart the more you heat this dish.
- To freeze chicken and dumplings, put them in a container that can go in the freezer and store them for up to 6 months. Defrost at room temperature and reheat on the stove or in the microwave.
- In a hurry? You can use a biscuit baking mix like Bisquick instead of making the dumplings from scratch. Feel free to pick from the many different flavors it comes in.
What Is The Difference Between Noodle and Drop Dumplings?
The shape is different, but the dough is the same.To make noodle dumplings, you roll out the dough into long, thick strands that look like noodles.
Because of how they are made, noodle dumplings are more delicate and soft than drop dumplings.
Drop dumplings can be either square or round. As they cook, they puff up, making them chewy and like bread.
In either case, they will be delicious.
Can I Use Pre-Cooked Chicken With These Dumplings?
If you want to, you can use chicken that has already been cooked in this recipe. Using a cooked chicken from a rotisserie or another source is a good way to save time.
In that case, cook the dumplings with the broth, celery, and onion. About 5 minutes before the dumplings are done, take out the celery and onion pieces and add the shredded or chopped chicken to warm it through.
